About

I’m Elise. Welcome to the Wardrobe I Wish I’d Had at 5’1″.

The Day Everything Was Too Long

I was standing in a fitting room with a pile of clothes I had been so excited about an hour earlier. The trousers pooled over my shoes. The blazer sleeves covered my knuckles. The “midi” dress landed somewhere near my ankles, and the waist of everything sat in the wrong place, as if the clothes had been made for someone else and I was just borrowing them.

I did what most petite women do. I told myself it was fine. I’d get it hemmed. I’d roll the sleeves. I’d belt it. I bought three items, took them home, and wore none of them.

That was the day I stopped blaming my body and started asking a better question: why does so much fashion advice assume everyone is five foot seven?

That question became Petite Wardrobe.

Why Petite Women Deserve Better Advice

Petite doesn’t just mean short. It means shorter torsos, shorter inseams, narrower shoulders and a different balance in every outfit. A cropped jacket that looks great on a tall model can swallow you whole. A high-rise trouser can sit at the wrong spot, and a maxi skirt can turn into a costume.

Yet most style guides give petite women the same tired tips: “wear heels,” “avoid patterns,” “stick to monochrome.” I don’t believe in rules that make you smaller. I believe in proportion, fit and knowing what actually works on a smaller frame.

Who I Write For

If any of this sounds like you, you’re in the right place:

  • You are 5’4″ or under and tired of hemming everything you buy
  • You love fashion but never know whether a piece will work on your proportions
  • You want outfits that look polished without trying too hard
  • You shop online and want to know what really fits before you click “buy”
  • You’re building a smaller, smarter wardrobe you will wear on repeat

Whether you’re 22 or 52, working in an office or working from your kitchen table, I write the guides I couldn’t find when I started.

A Few Things You Should Know About Me

Most About pages say the author is “passionate about fashion.” I’ll skip that and tell you what’s actually true.

I keep a tape measure in my handbag and check the inseam of every pair of trousers before I buy them.

I have a tailor I trust completely, and I believe a good one is the best fashion investment any petite woman can make.

I own the same pair of cropped wide-leg trousers in three colors, and I regret nothing.

I wear thin gold hoops every single day. They’re the one thing I never change.

I live in a small apartment in Portland, Oregon, with my husband and a rescue cat named Biscuit, who supervises every outfit photo from the sofa.

I started sharing petite outfit ideas in 2019 on a small Pinterest board. It grew faster than I expected, and this site is the result.

How We Keep This Site Honest

Petite women have been let down by “one size fits all” advice for too long, so I take what we publish seriously.

Every article is researched before it goes live, and I review each one personally before it’s published. We check measurements, cuts, fabrics and fit notes wherever they matter, because a guide that ignores proportions isn’t a petite guide.

We update older posts regularly. Trends change, brands change their sizing, and advice that worked two years ago may not be right today.

If a link on this site earns us a commission, or a post is sponsored, we say so clearly. You should never have to wonder why something is recommended.

One Last Thing

If you’ve read this far, you probably read About pages carefully. So do I.

Here is what I believe: there is nothing wrong with your height. The clothes that didn’t fit were never the problem. The advice that told you to disguise your frame was the problem.

I’m glad you found Petite Wardrobe. If you have a question, a story or a topic you’d like me to cover, write to me at info@petitewardrobe.com. I read every message.
